Take a trip to the ghost town of Retlaw. You will notice some great historical signage placed by the Retlaw Historical Society, a camp kitchen, the old hall, a home or two, the ball diamond and some bases that show where buildings were once located. Still, the highlight has to be the restored Retlaw United/Union Church.
The church was constructed in 1918, during the good years of Retlaw, which started as a CPR town in 1913 that boomed incredibly in its early years.
Since then, the church has served as the site for several weddings and funerals and an annual candlelight Christmas service. This church, its restoration and its upkeep are a testament to the Retlaw community, Retlaw Historical Society and to descendants of the Retlaw settlers who have worked so hard to maintain this piece of their shared story.
It is a unique sight on the open prairie, and like many who visit, get ready for a lot of photos!
If you want to book an event at the church or go on a guided tour of the town, email tculverfranz@gmail.com or call 403-654-0220 in advance.
[Retlaw is located west of Vauxhall or, if coming from Taber, NW of Taber.]
A Fire Advisory is in effect for the Municipal District of Taber as of Friday, July 26, 2024.
Due to the hot, dry conditions that are forecasted to continue, the Municipal District of Taber has issued a Fire Advisory within the municipal boundaries until further notice.
With the Fire Advisory in effect, the public is advised that a higher fire risk exists.
Under the Fire Advisory, fire permits continue to be issued. We ask that you use extra caution while performing any controlled burn. Items permitted include:
Paper products
Untreated wood (wood or wood products that do not contain preservatives)
Items prohibited, even with a fire permit include:
Wood or wood products that contain preservatives
Non-wooden material
Waste material from construction sites (untreated wood is permitted)
Plastics (including chemical or pesticide containers, silage plastic, grain bags, and baler twine. However, these items can be recycled at our collection site locations.)
Rubber (including tires)
Animal manure or cadavers
Pathological waste
Combustible material in automobile bodies
Oil
The Municipal District of Taber will continue to review this situation and consider changes to the Advisory if conditions warrant it. There is no desire to have the Advisory in place for any longer than necessary – the goal is to advise the public of the hot, dry conditions causing the higher risk of fire, to protect persons, and property, and to reduce excess costs to ratepayers.
To accommodate bridge structure construction work along Hwy 3, there will be a traffic detour implemented on November 18th, 2024 just east of Taber between Hwy 36 and RR 16-3.
